One of the problems with foreign cinema is not every country is as free as ours when it comes to speech. Enter the UAE, (United Arab Emirates). Whom has apparently been rubbed the wrong way by the upcoming Tobe Hooper movie "Djinn". That follows the story of Khaled and Salama, a couple who return home from America to discover their apartment in a luxury high-rise, built on the site of the deserted fishing village, is also home to malevolent beings. According to MovieSushi, the movie has been shelved by its own producers! Apparently, a member of Abu Dhabi's Royal Family caught a screening of the film and was not pleased with what he saw.
Thus rumor has it that Mohammed Al Mubarak, the chairman of the studio who oversaw the foreign production, was paid off to shelve the movie. And has allegedly also refused to hear bids from distributors who were interested in purchasing the film for their respective territories. This is always a risk when making movies in certain foreign countries. Once you upset local royalty or old money, things can get pretty dicey. And considering that the UAE Emirati is not exactly crawling with moviehouses and production companies, no one really wants to go up against Mubarak on this for fear he will blackball them in the Emirati press.
Looks like all we can do is hope something falls into place here and this movie actually manages to make it out of the UAE so genre fans can see it! At any rate, pictured below...are some new pieces of imagery to emerge online from the film. That stars Khalid Laith, Razane Jammal, Aiysha Hart, Carole Abboud, Paul Luebke, and May El Calamawy. Not sure if or when we will ever see "Djinn". Hopefully, this whole fiasco can be squared away. But I wouldn't hold my breath.
