Plot:Based on the Frank Miller comic, Sin City is a violent city where the police department is as corrupt as the streets are deadly. Three interweaving stories involving 3 different people who all find their separate destinies in Sin City.
My Thoughts:This movie wouldn't have worked without the ensemble cast.
Review:"Sin City" is a film adaptation of Frank Millers comic book, which involves a city where the police are as corrupt and dangerous as the so called criminals who roam the street. We are given 3 different stories, which eventually interweave into each other as the film progresses, and wraps itself up in a nice and neat little bow at the end. This is one film that actually lacked a single plothole, atleast from where I was sitting. It's rare that I can say that about a movie these days, but "Sin City" kept the story very tightly written making sure it didn't lose any viewers along the way. Even when it goes off to tell another characters story, it doesn't lose the viewer. Speaking of characters, our three main characters are Marv (Mickey Rourke), a freakish looking man with superhuman strength and the ability to take mass amounts of bodily damage while dishing out immense amounts of pain and carnage to the bad guys, Hartigan (Bruce Willis), a hard luck detective with a bad heart, and Dwight (Clive Owen), a guy whos shivalry sets off a chain of events that cause the truce between the gangsters and cops of Sin City to crumble. All three have their separate stories told over the span of the 2 hour plus film, and they all wind up connecting at the end. Marv is out to find the person responsible for killing his one night stand Goldie, Hartigan is out to save a little girls life, and Dwight is out to inflict his own brand of justice on a woman beater named Jackie Boy (Benecio Del Toro). What I liked about "Sin City" besides it's use of black and white comic book photgraphy, and it's not being shy when it came to the violence scenes, were the characters and the overall story. I honestly don't think this film would've worked without the ensemble cast which includes the likes of Brittany Murphy, Michael Clarke Duncan,Jessica Alba, Nick Stahl, Elijah Wood, Michael Madsen,Rosario Dawson, and Josh Hartnett (briefly). Every character was also pretty interesting in their own right. Marv for a guy who was basically one inch away from being a killer himself, had a soft spot for women, and had a irk against guys who roughed them up. On his quest to avenge the woman he loved who was killed in her sleep by an unknown assailant, he crosses paths with her twin sister and Rosario Dawsons character, who plays the leader of a group of bad ass gun toting females. This film pretty much beats us over the head with this theme throughout the movie. Guys defending their dames. Thats basically the theme of 'Sin City". Amongst each separate character venturing out into their story, theres alot of bloodshed along the way. The criminals in "Sin City" consist of the usual types such as crooked senators, their rich kids, and a few freakshows with sadistic tastes,Elijah Wood being one of them. Wood and Stahl are the films *bas****s*, if you will. Especially Stahl who shows up later in the film with an extreme makeover (the key word being extreme). Willises character plays a betrayed cop who crosses paths with Stahls character, who is a sadistic young man who gets off on harming young girls in brutal ways. I think the story between Willises character,Stahl, and Alba was the best story of the films 3 tales. Mainly because of the way it ended. Followed closely by the story which featured Clive Owen,Rosario Dawson, and Brittany Murphy. "Sin City" also tosses us a few nice twists within each of the 3 tales, and some awesome action scenes as well. I also liked how each story featured and spotlighted a specific dimension of the movie. Marvs story spotlighted the films emotional aspect, while Dwight and Hartigans stories respectively spotlighted the films action and thriller aspects. "Sin City" gives us a mixed bag of
everything, action, drama, suspense, thriller, horror, etc, and surprisingly pulls it off very well. This is one of the few movies where I didn't turn my head in disgust or roll my eyes when the love story angles came into play. The characters were all so well written, well introduced into the story, and interesting in their own right, that I was too eager to see what they were going to do next to be put off by the any of the mushy stuff. This movie is definitely worth your time and money. The best thing about it is even though it clocks in at 2 hours and about 10 minutes, it's such an entertaining and gripping film that it seems like it's only an hour and a half long, and thus you won't find yourself getting restless at all. Atleast I didn't. Check out "Sin City",you won't regret it. It has a great cast, interesting characters, more blood and gore than every horror movie so far this year combined has had, and a great story to boot.
Pros:Great performances, awesome story, great good guys, great bad guys, and the black and white comic book style of the film which I didn't approve of at first glance, really worked in this movie.
Cons:I couldn't find one single thing wrong with this movie. One "minor" complaint would be they could've made the story involving Marv a bit longer.
Overall:"Sin City" in one word is awesome. Don't pass on seeing this in theaters. It's a real gem.
