Plot:Set during an 80's-themed-dinner-party. Things take a dark turn when one in the group hijacks the evening in an attempt to help the others come clean about their secret betrayals against one another, and is willing to cut through the bone in order to expose the truth.
Cast: Danielle Harris Chris Backus Jennifer Blanc Biehn AJ Bowen Brianne Davis Dana Daurey Kamala Jones Alyssa Lobit Chris Meyer Tanya Newbould
My Thoughts:Yall better come clean before she chops off another finger! Review:"Among Friends" is another directorial effort by actress Danielle Harris. A veteran of our beloved genre, who's appeared in "Halloween"s "4", "5", and "Rob Zombie's Halloween" (2007). As well as many other genre films. Harris's first directorial effort was a film called "Prank". Which for all intents and purposes kind of vanished. And never made the splash it was supposed to. Harirs however now returns in "the orchestrator's chair" in this nod to 80's slasher movies. "Among Friends" brings together a collection of rich, privledged teenage characters. Who of course lead debaucherous lives. Filled with drugs, sex, illegal behavior...you name it. But because of their place in the food chain, along with a clever bit of strategizing...none of these behaviors are ever exposed to the public. And in some cases...each other. They are invited to a friends house for a gathering, which turns out to be an 80's-themed dinner party. Upon arriving (and after a cool Kane Hodder cameo)...the kids begin to play up the "theme" of the party in their usual drug-induced and harsh-digs type of ways. But once they all sit down to have dinner, somethign strange begins to happen. Seems their drinks were laced with a little bit of something. A paralyzing agent which shuts down body movements from the waist down. Now that they all have no place else to be (literally), "someone" is gonna make them all confront their true selves. And the secrets they've been keeping, from the world....and each other. "Among Friends" sets a wonderful tone from the very start, to show the audience what the director is trying to do here. And trying to accomplish. This isn't one of those horror movies where you have to guess what it's trying or attempting to be. Or what its influences "are" or "aren't". This picture is a "straight nod to 80's dark-comedy-horror". Films like "Happy Birthday To Me", "April Fools Day", etc. It has characters who you probably wouldn't like in real life. Once you get past their good looks, and into their shallow, and soul-less personalities. Oh these aren't terrible kids. They haven't like, murdered anyone or anything. Ala "I Know What You Did Last Summer". But they certainly are on a path to being the upstarts to those bastard teenagers from Stephen King's "Carrie". In that they have participated in a lot of sick and twisted activities. One of which being a rape. The characters while, ethically, and morally bankrupt...are fun in their own way to watch on screen. This is because despite the tawdry, salacious, and scandalous secrets that connect them as a group...they all have contrsting personalities. Jules (Brianne Davis), is the bubbly one of the group. And in her case, it's double jeopardy because she's high on shrooms, along with being paralyzed...during this "trip down memory lane". While AJ Bowen (Adam), and Melanie (Blanc Biehn)...are the more serious members of the gang. And when the s*** hits the fan, and they realize they've all been drugged...their survival instincts kick in, and they both put up a fight despite being half-paralyzed. The member of the group, who decides to make the others confront their "ugly corrupt souls", is Bernadette (Alyssa Lobit). She is definitely the more mature of the gang, which comes through in her persona overall. And of course, her decision to bring the gang together for this "faux party". But she also has more than a few screws loose. And while making her friends watch tape of themselves behaving in less-than-stellar-fashion, when someone gets out of line with her, or breaks one of her "rules"...she makes sure they pay a heavy price. Lobit gives a terrific performance in the film, with a blend of sexy and psycho, and a dash of "it's for the greater good" thrown in. You kind of side with her character in many areas. But when the finger cutting and stuff worse than that kicks in, you start to question her sanity. Even as she i supposedly doing all of this to restore some justice and morality to her friends cushy (and otherwise empty) lifestyles. Harirs herself doesn't appear in the film for a long period of time, but she does make an appearance in a very trippy, and weird scene where Jules has a "bad trip"....and imagines herself back on set. The costume Harris sports in this lengthy scene, will instantly be noticed by genre fans familiar with her earlier works. "Among Friends" isn't just a straight-forward morality tale though. The movie definitely carries strong horror elements. Which shine through in one scene where Bernadette is involved in a very "felt" and "up close" knife sequence. And thrown in for good measure, is a question mark character. One of the groups female friends named Lily, who's passed out in a bathtub somewhere in the house. And proves to play a pivotal role in how this "party" ends. "Among Friends" is a fun watch for genre fans, and the casual horror flick watcher looking for something new and original, while sifting through the DVD release bin. That these days...consists of terrible low-budget slasher films, and ghost movies with piss poor twist endings. It's crisp directing, nice use of 80's homage'ism, and above-average performances and script...all come together for a very enjoyable movie watching experience. THE GOOD:Terrific script, fantastic directing, interesting-attention-grabbing story, and good performances. The few scenes that do involve violence fit snugly into the story, and serve a purpose. Instead of being gratuitous and violence for violence sake. The 80's horror influences laid out a nice plot groundwork for the film as well. THE BAD:The films ending comes out of aleft field a bit. Felt unfinished and a bit brash. OVERALL:Fou stars out of four.

Plot:Joey suspects his girlfriend of two years, Jennifer, is cheating on him. He is so convinced that he enlists the help of his cousin Steven to create a Video Dairy of his attempt to catch her in the act as well as to document the heartbreak she is putting him through. He intends to give this tape to her after catching her, in an attempt to make her feel guilty.
Cast: Jessica Cameron Chuck Pappas Jody Barton James Cullen Bressack Tristan RiskMy Thoughts:A brave attempt to "Further-Twist" the "Already Twisted". Review:"TO JENNIFER" is the latest genre offering from filmmaker James Cullen Bressack. Who also helmed "My Pure Joy", a slasherfest...and "Hate Crime". A more serious-toned, psychological home-invasion thriller/horror/drama. Now comes, ''TO JENNIFER". A movie which is a brave attempt at making what's already 'effed up'...'more effed up'. The story begins as youngster Joey (Pappas), believes his girlfriend Jennifer (Cameron) is cheating on him. To further test this theory, he summons his Cousin Steven (Cullen Bressack), and another friend named Martin (Barton)...to document his journey to see her. Steven's job? Make a video diary of the event as it unfolds. While Martin is there to supply the props (party guests, girls, etc). This all starts as Joey trying to decide if Jennifer is screwing around on him or not. And escalates into Joey deciding he "is" gonna make the long trip to where she lives, and confront her about her cheating ways. This seems like it will end in heartbreak and disaster, most of these types of situations usually do. But are bloodshed? Even...MURDER? On tap as well? In "TO JENNIFER"...it seems that James Cullen Bressack wanted to blend all of his favorite genres together - ALONG WITH a horror movie. This pic has elements of road tripping, partying, guy-support-system....etc. Hell, a pair of prostitutes (one of which has a slight indentity crisis)...even make an appearance. All of the things you'd usually see in big-budget Hollywood comedy movies. Except, it's very obvious that "TO JENNIFER" is a small budget, indie effort. Which was the purpose all along. As the movie was originally filmed for the iPhone platform. So it truly was constructed, to be, and feel like a movie you can travel with, and take with you. I dug how that holw "vibe", was integrated into the movie. From the scene where Joey and his Cousin arrive in town via airplane. And await Martin to pick them up in his car. To a scene much later, involving the very same car which is used by Joey to finally make the drive to Jennifer's place. The film in that respect, feels like a road movie. And er go, since it's meant to be watched on the iPhone platform, you can literally check this piece out while you're en route to wherever it is you are headed to. And whatever method of travel you're using. It's a smart, new way of creating a universe around an indie picture. The film itself does not start out, or possess strong elements of horror early on. In fact, this is the type of movie you see unfolding two ways. If you looked at the poster beforehand. But as the movie goes on, it seems like Joey is headed for a head-on collision with Jennifer. His "heartbreak" is constantly documented by his cousin, and then Martin has a "small gathering" of people over to boost Joey's confidence prior to his trip to see Jennifer. And of course Steven documents all of this, egging the gathering attendees on to tell Jennifer how much she "sucks" for cheating on Joey. This movie smartly invokes the typical "male viewer" emotion towards a scenario like this. Especially because Joey comes off as a decent guy. But deep down, you know "something" bad...is gonna happen. And as the film progresses, and enters its third act. This is when you expect all sorts of things to happen. Like a mad, masked killer to show up. Or an angry neighbor to show up, and start picking people off because they weren't "keeping the noise down". Or perhaps "someone unseen" had been follwowing Joey and Steven all film long. And is waiting for the right time to strike? Well...something is amidst, but it never rears its ugly, psychotic, crazy head...until the very moment when it's "time to go see Jennifer". And when that moment arrives, the film teases its first reveal at what's really happening. Yet from there, the surprises KEEP COMING. Instead of tapering off, and leaving the viewer disappointed, dejected, and bored. The collection of clever-reveals, boosts the movies final act tremendously. Not just because they really are shocking, but they're smartly done as well. And make you rethink EVERYTHING you thought or were thinking just 20 minutes earlier. Cullen Bressack then seals the viewers fate by taking the final act-conclusion...to a very, dark, and disturbing place. Which is where we finally get to see the often-mentioned JENNIFER (Cameron). In an ending which some will see as unfair and too ambiguous. But I saw as very twisted and nasty. "TO JENNIFER" is worth your time, just to see a film that delivers something fresh and different to a plot that could've taken any myriad of predictable exits to conclude its story. But instead, chose a much braver, and "effed up" direction. THE GOOD:This is not a "scary movie" in the normal vien. It's more a smart thriller with strong horror elements in its final act. But as for the twists and turns it takes to get there, you will be pleasantly surprised. THE BAD:The "party" scene is pretty bad in the quality of women Martin manages to 'scrape together'. And there was also no music. An inside joke within the film perhaps? OVERALL:Three and a half stars out of four.

Plot:Horror/Anthology that features five terrifying tales!
SUCCUBUS: Is about a beautiful young blonde, Emma, studying to become an archeologist. On an excavation trip to Syria she finds something in the sand that is about to change her life completely. She hurries home hoping to be able to escape it, but she is about to get wiser.
MY UNDEAD GIRLFRIEND: Is a twisted story with a lot of morbid, dark humor, telling the story of the day Keith woke up next to his girlfriend who had out of the blue turned into a flesh eating undead and tonight he is about to meet her parents for the first time! This day is going to be a bit out of the ordinary!
MOTHER KNOWS BEST: Is the story about Carl, a somewhat shy man preparing for a date with his childhood sweetheart, Rebecca. Carl’s mother has quite a few objections about the date and she is not too shy to express them, though.
A WOMAN SCORNED: We meet Gail tied to a bed by Holly. Gail have had the nerve to start a relationship with Richard, who unfortunately is Holly’s former husband – and Gail does not approve at all!
GENITAL GENOCIDE: Presents us to serial killer Charles Albert Harris who, sitting on death row waiting for the switch to be turned on, takes us through his crimes while the audience of the court room listens. Harris wants a last reaction out of the audience that consists of many relatives of his audience – and a reaction he gets. Cast: Kim Sønderholm David C. Hayes Michael Harrelson Debbie Overbey Rob Douglas Rick Dyer Daren Palacio Bart OverbeyMy Thoughts:Horror-Anthology flick with an old-school feel. Review:One caviat of the genre that never really sees a big-budget offering, is the Horror-Anthology film. The closest this particular subset of the genre has ever gotten to being big budget, is the old "Creepshow" movies of the 80's. That had some big name actors (now), who were on-the-way-up (back then). Horror/Anthology series or shows, are far more successful than feature-length-films. I guess that's because peoples attention spans for one film are short enough. Now try to grab and hold their attention for 5 short movies wrapped into 90 minutes. Nevertheless, horror-anthologies keep on coming down the pipe. Some good, some bad, some...worse. "Sinister Visions", the brainchild of one Kim Sonderholm, is not one of the greatest horror-anthologies you'll ever watch. But it has an old-school-horror appeal that is very attractive and appealing to the genre fan who remembers watching late night scare flicks on Cinemax, or USA Up All Night. When you were definitely "not of age to be watching". The movie features five segments, most of which are directed by Sonderholm. Two others (My Undead Girlfriend and Genital Genocide)...were directed by Henric Brandt, and Doug Gehl respectively. The first entry, "Succubus"...is one of Kim's offerings. And it deals with a woman named Emma who is overcome and eventually possessed by the mythological female demon. Who feeds on men. The segment doesn't have the best acting, but it tells the story it sets out to tell. Quickly and appealingly. But with some cheesy and cliche moments as well. As an example, one of the seg's best moments...is when Emma is broken-down by the demon as she walks the streets, and is eventually forced to enter a nightclub to feed her insatiable *appetite*. By this time, the force inside her has completely taken over. At times, the actress playing Emma can be quite good. At other times, not so much. But the characters inner-turmoil is what keeps the segment on track, and interesting to behold. The cheesier/cliche moments come when she finds her next "victim", at a nightclub with blaring music. Seems every story these days involving a vampire, succubus, or possession in general. Has to take our main character to a local nightclub. Oh, and then of course she has to have a "bitch" moment when she blatantly snags another womans "date" right from her. I just wish for once in one of these sorts of stories, it'd be a different path taken. Instead of a "good girl" getting possessed and becoming "a bad girl". It's way too easy and comes off more as social commentary instead of true "horror". Anyways, what genre fans should really be stoked for in the "Succubus" seg, is the finale when we get some excellent FX&Makeup work on display. Not gonna spoil anything, but it's worth checking this film out on DVD for. This segment overall is decent. The possession story is a favorite of filmmakers these days, and Sonderholm packs as much punch as he can into this short-lived segment. Much better of a possession story told here in about 15 minutes, than I've seen some feature-length movies and sequels tell in 90+ minutes, that's for sure. "Succubus" is followed up by a "zombie seg" called "My Undead Girlfriend". Where a man wakes up one day next to his girlfriend, only to discover she has become a member of the UNDEAD! Now that she's a zombie, Keith...her other *living half*...has to decide whether to kill her or, continue on with this relationship in some form. Complicating matters, is this being the very day he was scheduled to meet her p[arents for the first time. And, a local loan shark who Keith owes money to. I REALLY LIKED this segment, and wished it would've ran longer than it did. It was a new take on the zombie story. One that didn't involve shady corporations, governments, or some experimental virus. FOR ONCE! It was just a normal guy put into a more-than-complicated situation. And thanks to his girlfriend becoming a zombie, now he's got to figure out a way to dress her up to appear as a member of the living! Just so as not to arouse any suspicion from her parents later on when they arrive for dinner. Needless to say, the plan doesn't go off exactly..."without a hitch". Leading to a pretty comical conclude to the segment as a whole. Brandt who directed this segment, kicks-ass with this entry! I must say I liked it a lot better than the first segment, "Succubus". The film continues on from here with three more segments to finish things off. They are "Mother Knows Best", "Woman Scorned", and "Genital Genocide". The former segment, is quite an interesting character study. And a lot of what appears as the characters on the surface...is NOT AT ALL what is really going on beneath the surface. Sonderholm redeems himself and rebounds nicely with "Mother Knows Best". AKA...segment number 3. Not that I hated "SUCCUBUS". But I just wasn't into some parts. "Mother Knows Best" is a lot more creepy, disturbing, and dark. It plays almost a little like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" meets "Psycho" meets "The People Under The Stairs." And the actress who plays the aforementioned "Mother" in this segment, gives new meaning to the term "Mommie Dearest". "Woman Scorned" is another "dark entry" from Sonderholm about a woman who has her heartbroken, and decides to "sharpen" her skills at getting-even using a REAL KNIFE. This tale is smartly, and cleverly written to not fall into any of the usual love-triangle-horror traps, or cliches. It has a small twist involving the main players, and the acting avoids coming off as cheap-soap-opera junk. And instead, all the players involved roll this thing out likened to a real torture-horror-movie. That is just as long as it "needs to be". Not too long to the point of offending or turning off its audience with overkill and unnecessary sadism. Unfortunately, "Sinister Visions" doesn't save the best for last. Segment "Genital Genocide" is the worst one of the group. It's involves a rapist who is unapologetic about his crimes. Even as he faces execution in front of a live audience. The character here comes off more as gross, perverse, and disgusting, than compelling and psychologically disturbing. The set up of the story was terrific, sure. But the characters in it weren't written well enough to bring forward the desired effect. Thus, this segment comes off as kind of a throw away entry. Although it has quite the grusome conclude...everything before this moment is not written or acted out compellingly enough. Can't slam the seg too much though, as these stories about allowing the audience into the mind of a killer or victimizer, are very hard to pull off. And maybe, just cannot work within an anthology format. In the end, "Sinister Visions" is worth giving a watch to, if looking for a horrornathology film with an old-school 80's appeal. Where each story is unique and different than what came before it. And goes that extra mile to map out almost all corners of the genre. THE GOOD:The films strongest segments are: "MY UNDEAD GIRLFRIEND", which nicely blends a new twist on the zombie story, with some great humor moments. "MOTHER KNOWS BEST", which is about as "dark" as "dark" can get. "WOMAN SCORNED"...which smartly handles a nugget of the torture-porn subgenre in a small amount of time alloted. And "SUCCUBUS"...which despite its occasionally cheesy and cliche moments here and there. Is a good creature story, and actually reminded me a bit of an episode of the old sci-fi/horror t.v. series "MONSTERS". THE BAD:I just cannot or could not find anything to like about the final segment, "GENITAL GENOCIDE". It seemed too forced at times, too over-the-top, and the villain in it goes too far and is absolutely stomach turning. OVERALL:Three stars out of four.
