This movie is legendary in the genre along with it's 4 year prior counterpart 'Halloween'. But unlike 'Halloween' which had Michael Myers and of course Carpenters original score to give us chills down our spine, 'Friday the 13th' relied on not showing it's killer until the end, and relied on atmosphere. The peaceful quietness of the woods, and what lurked in those woods. Thus why it suceeded in creating real genuine scares and still does for some people to this day. Thought I'd ask this question, did 'Friday the 13th' scare you the first time you saw it? and If it did, does it still have the same effect on you now as it did the first time? Does it still give you chills and or goosebumps? Or is it just entertaining now rather than genuinely scary? For me it's a bit of both. I don't find the film nearly as scary now as I did when I saw it the first 3 times. Now it's a combination of creepy and entertaining. I don't think I'd find it the least bit creepy now though if it took place in the suburbs or city rather than the woods of Camp Crystal Lake.

Unfortunatly, it never scared me. But I've always found it entertaining.

It's mostly entertaining for me now, especially because Kevin Bacon as an actor scares me more than Mrs. Voorhees so I love the part when he gets killed . I don't really remember ever being really scared of anything but the music in this film though. The way the "che che che" sort of sounded like the woods themselves was creepy and added to the suspense. But now that I know everything that happens, the scare is gone and I watch it for reminescing purposes (and to see Kevin Bacon get killed). I've always loved the fact that the killer was a middle-aged woman in a sweater. Awesome. And the survivor in the film actually making sure that the killer stays dead by cutting her head off is respectable (how could she have known that she would piss off Mrs. Voorhees' son and start him on a rampage through nine sequels?). I'm also gonna give props to the sequel, which is one of the best sequels out there. It's some good trivia also that not only was Jason not the original killer, he also didn't don his hockey mask until the third movie...in his first appearance in the sequel, he wears a sack over his head. All your friends will either be really impressed or think you're really lame by sharing that tidbit (I know my friends thought I was really lame ).

Is it just me or does anyone find the scenes where Mrs Voorhees is chasing that girl around camp crystal lake funny? I mean when I first saw it I was really into it and cheering the girl on and stuff, but over time I just find myself laughing at Mrs Voorhees actions during those scenes. Especially when she starts backhanding the girl in the boathouse scene. Then the chick retaliates with a low blow. Brutal.
