My Thoughts:Pretty ridiculous.
Review:"Bloodlust Zombies" is a very small almost no-budget zombie movie, where a group of people, on duty at a military-experiment facility, end up in a world of trouble when the latest experimental drug ends up turning some of the facilities employees, into flesh-craving cannibals. Of course this movie is certain to avoid calling them "zombies." I guess because it wants to hold itself to a higher standard than the A-typical small-budget indie horror flick? As if.
And having a porn star in the lead in Alexis Texas, really kind of kills any attempt at holding anything involving this film to a quote unquote "higher standard." Texas though actually gives a good performance in the flick. Which is either a good thing, or a bad thing because all of the other actors are just that bad. The craziness begins when a cat, infected with a new military/weaponized serum, scratches and attacks one of the facilities scientists.
From there, it's the usual transferrence of the zombie plague via bite and such. Before you know it, the building is crawling with flesh-craving killers, and those who are left uninfected...break out guns and stuff to protect themselves. In the middle of all of this cranage, personal issues amongst the characters such as sexism, office affairs, douchebaggery, etc...must be sorted out. If everyone hopes to survive. The problem with this movie above all else, is it's small budget.
Now I've seen movies like "American Nightmare" (2001), and "Satan's Little Helper" (2005), which did wonders with a tiny budget. But this film, "Bloodlust Zombies"...just didn't manage to pull off any of those uncanny things. And I guess when you don't have a Debbie Rochon or Amanda Plummer on your team, it makes matters much more difficult. Texas pretty much carries this movie, as it is her starring vehicle. And in scenes when she's not on screen, the film suffers a lot. Texases character is Andrea, a woman who works for a the head honcho at the facility, Bobby Lee as his secretary/assistant.
She thinks banging him is the way to get ahead, until she's convinced otherwise. As she struggles to find her inner-feminist, the zombie outbreak provides her with the perfect opportunity to become more self-reliant. As she pretty much has to rely on herself to survive the incident. With everyone else being either dead, or out of reach. The films story works for the most part because of that small little piece of plot work.
But of course then there's the zombies. Similar to movies like "28 Days Later", and "Dawn Of The Dead 2004"...the zombies are pretty much raving, raging people who are looking to ravenously feed on anyone whom crosses their path. But because this is a no-budget movie...it does not manage to cast these flesh-eaters off as fierce, scary, and terrifying. When these zombies appear on screen, you're not scared. Nor are the moments intense. Instead, they look quite ridiculous, and the blood in the movie looks A-typical shoe-string budget'ish.
It's really hard to take a movie like this seriously at all as a viewer. Even on the most basic level of which one would take a movie in general, seriously. As there are so many things wrong with it. You really have to abandon a lot intellectually to even get through this thing. And while there are a ton of indie horror films made every day almost, they all atleast try to tell a story. "Bloodlust Zombies" though seems to just have been out for some sort of joyride. So someone can say they made a zombie movie, and got it released to DVD also.
The movie tries to show some flashes of decent storytelling though, even going so far as to offer up a lengthy explanation about the serum, and why it was created. But the whole scene comes off as a huge yawn because we've seen the military-experiment-with-good-intentions-gone-horribly-wrong scenario in how many horror movies now? I'm guessing at this point 250+. This film makes number 251, or maybe 1001.
Who can keep score at this point? At any rate, "Bloodlust Zombies" has a lot of flaws. But I give it points for putting a porn star in the lead, and her actually giving a good performance. It's always a risky move, and when it pays off atleast 60%...I guess it's a win.
Positives:Alexis Texas gives a good performance as Andrea, the intern/assistant/secretary who just wants to live to see tomorrow. And also regrets sleeping with her boss.
Negatives:The zombies were lame, the fx were lame. A lack of entertainment value in scenes where Alexis was not on screen. Hardly any intensity, suspense, or real true horror in this movie. Even though it stakes it's claim as an obvious zombie/comedy of sorts. Still...it was never a fun moment here.
Overall:Two stars out of four.
