My Thoughts:Third times a charm!
Review:"My Super Psycho Sweet 16 3" picks up shortly after the second movie. After Charlie Rotter was "put down" in "MSPS16 2"...Skye (McKnight), his daughter moved on with her life. Charlie is indeed dead, but he also took all of Alexes (Prout) remaining family members with him. Leaving Alex a mental mess at the end of part 2. Now, Skye is heading to college in New York City with her new friend Sienna.
But she's detoured when Alex calls her over to her mansion for her own Sweet 16 party. Which is where we're introduced to a whole new set of teenage characters. Alexes "new" friends apparently. Since all of her old ones were murdered back in the last installment. But once Skye arrives, it doesn't take long for things to get "horrific". As a local guy, apparently obsessed with Alex...begins to rain down bloody murder upon her new social circle.
But is there more to this sweet 16 party than meets the eye? "MSPS 16 3" is a pretty good second sequel in the MTV franchise, and surpasses the first sequel simply by being smarter in how it weaves its storyline. The characters this time around aren't a blend of charming and bratty. Brigg, Skye's "guy" now, apparently...for example, is put on the back burner this time around. While Alexes new social circle are pretty obnoxious.
Sienna is probably the only non-obnoxious newbie in this movie. As far as characters are concerned. With Skye now being a senior in this slasher franchise, and Alex a sophomore. Alexes stalker guy is typical slasher film weird, in the vein of a male Eve Agnew (Black Christmas 2007). And is the "obvious" killer once the film gets going. But while he is slashing his way through Alexes friends, you get the feeling that there's just gonna be more to it than that. When all is said and done.
The kills are pretty bloody, but not as creative as Charlies kills through the first two films. This time since the killer is not Charlie though, the filmmakers opted to go the "sheer brutality" route with things. Which worked out in the end since we're so familiar with the franchise by this time around. The film also tosses the viewer some cool twists in the third act, which is where a "wolf-in-sheeps-clothing" scenario emerges.
As well as a little side story about one characters obsession with the "Charlie Rotter" legacy. With Alex and Skye being the obvious center of that little caviat. If there's one thing this movie misses though, it's Charlie Rotter. Now I know he's dead, but the character was a pretty tortured dude. And made for a good villain with some key, and intriguing quirks. And now that the third film has come and gone, you have to wonder if this is truly the end for this franchise. Which would make sense considering it's an official "trilogy" now.
But I would like to see a fourth movie just for kicks. As part 3 concludes with some pretty cool (and gory) moments, but ultimately doesn't fully "conclude". Considering the ending while darkly-humorous, is also ambiguous in some ways. But can also double for a true "finale" to things also. Of course, you never know with slasher movie franchises.
But atleast for now, I think the "MSPS 16" series is done. But it certainly ended pretty classically and finished its run with an edge most definitely. Ironically, I would say overall that this series has gotten better with each new sequel. A rareity in horror these days. My opinion of course. But considering that this franchise is on a pretty good hot streak, maybe that's reason to not do a fourth movie after all?
Positives:Good, solid kills. Nice mansion/grounds backdrop-setting. Interesting twists, and a very strong ending. The film also carried itself pretty well without Charlie Rotter being the focal point this time around.
Negatives:Alexes friends were over-the-top at times but not too much.
Overall:Three and a half stars out of four.
